About Rich
A quick(ish) overview of my experience and journey into design leadership.
Origins in product design
I graduated from Ravensbourne with a Foundation Diploma and BA in Product and Furniture design. In addition to the innovation and problem solving skills that product design required, I grew an affinity for graphic design and a love of software. With these multiple disciplines, I began working for Suck UK, crafting homeware products, creating illustrations for packaging and working on pitches for new products.
I developed a knack for interior design and began specialising as a 3D visualiser for commercial spaces, alongside working as a graphic design intern at Exposure. I was lucky to be mentored by a team of senior creatives, and delivered award winning brand and advertising campaigns for broadcast and entertainment clients such as Sony, MTV, VH1 and Bravo TV.
From print to pixels
I took an opportunity with Telegraph media Group where I spent three transformative years working my way from junior to senior designer – mastering the aspects of print design & advertising communications, including photography, illustration and copywriting.
Eager for change and challenge, I found it at Yahoo! in a demanding creative and design ops role. I was responsible for the conceptualisation and delivery of B2B & B2C creative services across EMEA – including branding, animation, email development, and event design.
Growth and leadership
Ever-curious of big tech, I moved to Amazon Advertising, and spent the next five years developing my design leadership and UX skills, scaling the team and processes to accommodate 200% YoY business growth. I won multiple awards during my tenure and am an accredited Amazon inventor for the conception and delivery of Amazon SmileCode. Responsible for key business verticals, design ops and strategy, I guided my team to build user-centred experiences on behalf of 100+ brands – spanning web, App, Fire Tablet and Fire TV platforms in the form of landing pages, interactive advertising and e-commerce experiences.
Test and learn
In recent years I've experienced a variety of industries and environments, seeing both good and bad approaches to building teams, products and observing outcomes. Through this, I have gained a pragmatic mindset to product design and continue to evangelise for the end-user at every opportunity.
I am currently at working with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as a Principle UX Designer – leading end-to-end design for complex, cloud computing solutions.
